The 1970s was a time of significant social change in the United States, with a strong focus on civil rights and racial equality. The establishment of Black Student Unions (BSUs) in high schools nationwide was a direct response to this movement. Members in the North Central High Schools class of 1974 saw the intense value such an organization could bring to address the unique experiences and challenges faced by Black students and to create a sense of community and support. Their vision took hold and the NCHS Black Student Union continues as one of the longest-lasting organizations at North Central.
One of the most impactful activities undertaken by our BSU are travel opportunities for juniors and seniors to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). These trips are invaluable in expanding a student’s understanding of what higher education can look like. Before the Pandemic, approximately 80-90% of trip attendees applied and were accepted to HBCUs with many being offered financial assistance.
This October, the BSU will travel to Nashville, TN on its first HBCU campus visit since 2019, before the pandemic. This year, to honor their fifty-year reunion and its tie to this important student organization, a group of classmates spearheaded an effort to raise funds to support the NCHS Black Student Union and their annual HBCU visit experiences. Gifts will be utilized to offset the trip expenses and provide scholarships; making the opportunity more accessible.
